PhD Candidate
Biography
Mr. Bhatt is studying
for a PhD. (commenced April 2004) at the Department
of Computer Science at La Trobe University,
Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce &
Economics degree (BCom, April 2001) from Narsee
Monjee College of Commerce & Economics, Mumbai
University (India) and a Master of Information
Technology (MIT, November 2003) degree from La Trobe
University (Australia). Mr. Bhatt started his
research career as a research scholar at the
Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Group,
University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) by
way of a National ICT (NICTA) sponsored scholarship.
He extended his internship experience toward his
honours thesis, where he applied a high-level logic
based approach for control in dynamic environments,
focusing on the deliberative aspects of agency in
such environments. In this context, the exemplar of
a simulated soccer environment was used as an
experimental test-bed. Mr. Bhatt has also held
research assistant/programmer positions at La Trobe
University and in that capacity, has contributed
towards various (funded) projects centered around
the use of Ontologies for knowledge representation –
Key results in this context being the development of
a distributed architecture for the extraction of a
sub-ontology from a large-scale base ontology and
the development of an Synthetic Environment Data
Representation Ontology (called sedOnto) with
potential applications in the Environment and
Defence Modeling and Simulation sector. Towards his
PhD. research, Mehul currently maintains an
interdisciplinary interest in the area of Ontologies,
Qualitative Simulation (QS), Qualitative Spatial
reasoning (QSR) and Reasoning about Action & Change
(RAC). On the recreational front, Mehul can be found
in the company of good books & films in his spare
(as well as not so spare) time.

PhD Candidate
Biography
Between 1998 and 2002,
Mr. Flahive
studied a double degree in Engineering (Electronics) and Computer
Science (Honors) at La Trobe University. In 2003 Andrew accepted candidature at La Trobe University to complete his PhD in Computer
Science. Andrews main research is in the area of Grid Computing,
Semantic Web and Ontology Tailoring. Some of his other research areas
include: Web Search Engines, Product Catalog Databases, Web and
E-Commerce Databases, Distributed Computing and Parallel Algorithms.
Since 2003, Andrew has had several International publications in Books,
Journals and Conference Proceedings. Throughout 2005 Andrew will continue
publishing his work and aims to completed his PhD in early 2006.
Currently he is investigating the Web Services Resource Framework (WSRF)
as well as the upcoming Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4) that will be using the
WSRF. He will be attempting to apply previous work in Ontology tailoring
in the Grid to the GT4 and the WSRF. Later in 2005 Andrew hopes to be
well on the way to writing up his PhD Thesis.
